Technical Update: 30 April, 2016

It is time for me to announce a technical update that has been made to this wiki earlier today (or yesterday in UTC time) regarding the Assistant User Group that was introduced to this wiki last year.

Yesterday, I sent a request to Wikia Staff requesting that I could have the following abilities added to the Assistant User Group. To my best of luck, they accepted my request without question.

The following abilities have been included with the Assistant User Group since the beginning:

Edit semi-protected pages (autoconfirmed)
Perform CAPTCHA-triggering actions without having to go through the CAPTCHA (skipcaptcha)
Quickly revert the edits of the last user who edited a particular page (rollback)
Change protection levels and edit protected pages (protect)
Have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol)
Move files (movefile)
Not create re-directs from source pages when moving pages (suppressredirect)
Move blog articles (blog-articles-move)
Not be affected by rate limits (noratelimit)
Override the spoofing checks (override-antispoof)
Override the title black list (tboverride)
Search deleted pages (browsearchive)
Upload files from a URL (upload_by_url)
Use higher limits in API queries (apihighlimits)
View a list of un-watched pages (unwatchedpages)
View deleted history entries, without their associated text (deletedhistory)
View deleted text and changes between deleted revisions (deletedtext)
Remove group from own account: Assistants

The following abilities have been added to the Assistant User Group as of yesterday/today:

Mark others' edits as patrolled (patrol)
Edit blog articles (blog-articles-edit)
Import pages from a file upload (importupload)
Mark reverted edits as bot edits (markbotedits)
Toggle comments on blog articles (blog-comments-toggle)
forumoldedit (forumoldedit)

I recently saw a discussion going on at the Encyclopedia SpongeBobia, the wiki where the Assistant User Group originated from, about the possibilities of expanding the Assistant User Group.

Well I felt, that it was about time that the user rights of the Assistant User Group was expanded, particularly given the fact that the Administrator and Discussion Moderator user groups have had their rights expanded across Wikia since the Assistant User Group was introduced. Also in January of this year, Wikia welcomed a new user group across Wikia, which is known as the Content Moderator User Group.

At the time of it's debut, I saw the Content Moderator User Group as a worthy companion for the Assistant User Group. The Content Moderator may not have had as many user rights as the Assistant User Group, but a notable advantage that the Content Moderator group has is the ability to delete and undelete pages.

The following abilities have been included with the Content Moderator User Group since the beginning:

Overwrite existing files (reupload)
Quickly revert the edits of the last user who edited a particular page (rollback)
Change protection levels and edit protected pages (protect)
Delete pages (delete)
Have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol)
Mark others' edits as patrolled (patrol)
Move files (movefile)
Not create re-directs from source pages when moving pages (suppressredirect)
Undelete a page (undelete)

The following abilities have been added to the Content Moderator User Group since it's debut:

Not be affected by rate limits (noratelimit)
View deleted history entries, without their associated text (deletedhistory)
View deleted text and changes between deleted revisions (deletedtext)
Remove group from own account: Content Moderators

The bottom line is that as time goes on, more rights may be added to the Content Moderator User Group which may threaten to make the Assistant User Group semi-obsolete in the future. While I do feel that the Assistant User Group still holds significance, it is the only user group that is unsupported across Wikia, since it is a custom user group, and thus it won't receive any user rights updates unless I request it.

But I do have full confidence that users in the Assistant User Group will benefit greatly from the additional tools that I have asked Wikia Staff to give them. Best of luck. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 02:14, April 30, 2016 (UTC)
